Request a Motion Sensing Power Strip.
Please use this form to order your free Motion Sensing Power Strip (MSPS). Use of the MSPS allows non-essential electrical items to be plugged in to outlets which are controlled by a passive infrared motion sensor.
- While you are working at your desk, normal movements keep the “controlled” equipment on.
- When you leave your desk or office, the power strip automatically turns off the equipment after a period of no activity.
- The length of “wait time” varies from 30 seconds to 30 minutes and can be determined by you.
- This allows us to avoid paying for electricity when equipment is not in use.
- Typical items to consider for the “controlled” side would be computer monitors (but not the cpu) and speakers, space heaters, radios, task lights, fans, various types of chargers, etc.
- These power strips also provide surge protection for all the equipment that is plugged in.
The Motion Sensing Power Strip, which costs the University $54, will be provided for free. Your part is to commit to using the power strip in the building as explained in the simple instructions included in the power strip box. By following these instructions, you will be able to maximize the electricity savings afforded by the motion sensing power strip.
We estimate that the payback for each MSPS will range from 2 to 7 years, depending on the number of accessories that are controlled, and by the length of "wait time" that you select.
